One of the new Share the Road signs on Upper Glass Bridge Road

News

2008 Officers:  The officers for 2008 have been voted in, and are listed below.  We wish them the best of luck in the coming year, and hope that the club can have it's best year yet!

Chairman - Patrick Wilson
Treasurer - Ken Hacka
Secretary - Jennifer Wiggins

Blazing Saddles Century:   It was a very successful first event in 2007, and we think that everyone had a good time.  We were able to put up 20 signs in Troup County and have been working with Heard County to get some signs up there too.  We were also able to donate to the Heard County High School that hosted the event, and to the LaGrange Area Radio Club (LARC) that supported us on the route.   So, we've decided to do it again next year!  It will be July 26th, 2008 to again raise money for Share the Road signs on our local roads.  It will again be hot, hilly, with the same 6 different mileage options beginning in Franklin, Georgia and crossing over into Alabama, covering at least 3 different counties.  It features, aside from the heat and hills, great roads, wonderful vistas and very friendly folks.  So make room on your calendar for this challenge, and help to make our local roads safer for cyclists!  More information can be found here.

Events Calendar:  We now have a google calendar set up whereby you can find out what's going on and when.  See the tab at left and check it out, or click here.  If you have any events you'd like added, email us and we'll get it added for you.

Discussion Group:  In an attempt to give us a better medium for discussion on various subjects I have opened up a google group.  You can read the discussions without joining, or you can join and add your own comments.  Go to the Discussion Group page and click on it's link to go directly to the forum.

Bicycle Maintenance Information:  Chris Cosby, a former Dirt Rag magazine employee, has recently moved to West Point.  He used to teach a bicycle maintenance course and has kindly supplied his course outline so that we could become better acquainted with the maintenance of our beloved machines.  Click here to read.   Additionally, I've found a nifty web page that has a lot of great tips ranging from tire pressure to picking up a dropped chain without ever getting off the bike (or stopping).  Check it out at http://www.jimlangley.net/crank/basicstuff.html

Trail Maintenance:
In addition to being the 2008 club treasurer, Ken Hacka is our trail guy.  He will be scheduling the trail maintenance work days, and any regular trail rides.  He can be contacted at trails@westgeorgiaflyers.org.  Thanks to his hard work we have almost completed the new beginner-level trail at the West Point Lake Dam that is 95% complete---it's rideable as is, so come on out and check it out (and help pack it in!).  This Fall/Winter/Spring we will be working on the Intermediate trails on the other side to expand the trails for more serious riders and give the beginners something to challenge themselves.  WGF club members that have paid their dues get big points for trail work (5 points per shift, with a possibility of two or three shifts per day), so make sure you come out and help, and if you have paid the dues yet, consider doing so.  The more people who come out and help, the easier it is for everyone and the faster we get our new trails, so try to make time and be there for the work days.
